Adults are humans or animals which have attained their maximum growth and development. In the human context adults have significance that is shaped by the legal and social world. A legal adult and not "minors" (also known as non-adults) are those who are older than the average age and therefore considered independent, responsible, and autonomous. Legal adults can also be called a major. The age at which a child becomes an adult legally is 18, however, the definition of maturity can be different depending on the legal or country system as well as the psychological condition of the child.

In the lifespan of an individual Adulthood refers to the age in which the person is at the point of complete mental and physical maturity. Adulthood, as commonly understood, starts around the age of either 20 or 21. Middle age starts at around 40 years and then it is followed by an old age of about 60. There are three primary levels of adulthood: the early years of the age of adulthood (18 to mid-30s), middle adulthood (mid-30s through mid-60s) as well as late adulthood (mid-60s up to the point of death). It is the time to complete physical development by the time we reach the early years of adulthood (20-40s) but the weight and height may increase slightly.
