Katarina Witt started to ice skate when she was five years old. She was able to prove her skill and was accepted into the Karl-Marx-Stadt Special School for gifted kids. This is where she had a conversation with her coach Jutta M ller. Witt was able to make her debut season in 1982 when she finished second at the World Championships held in Copenhagen. Her graceful and elegant style caught the attention of everyone at that time, and from then ahead she became the dominant figure skater in the sport. Olympic triumphs at the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Games, Katarina Witt won a close battle to take home the women's figure skating gold medal. After four years, that she was able to win an even more tighter race. Witt actually fell short of the free-skating competition, but was awarded the gold medal based upon her results in the mandatory figures as well as the short programme. Witt became the very first time a repeat winner in women's figure skating in the sport since Sonja Henie. Hall of Fame Witt had amazing success in her acting career however she returned to figure skating to participate in the Lillehammer Winter Games of 1994. While she was not able to take home a medal, the young woman enchanted her audience despite placing seventh. In 1995, Witt received her induction into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame.
